Gascoyne Catchment Group: Rangelands Monitoring App

Hybrid Application Solution to suit specific business needs

The Rangelands Monitoring App for the Gascoyne Catchment Group (GCG) demonstrates IBC Digital’s expertise. in developing complex enterprise systems and applications. The main challenge in this project was the remote, low-connectivity environments—a critical issue across Western Australia’s vast rangelands. Since taking over a faltering project in 2017, IBC Digital has transformed the application into a user-friendly, feature-rich platform that landholders and regulators rely on to collect, analyse, and report on vital land, soil, and environmental data.

Offline Capabilities & Remote Data Sync

From the outset, a key development priority was enabling the app to function seamlessly offline:

  • Local Data Storage: Users can record detailed observations—such as vegetation details, soil parameters, and site photos—even without an internet connection.
  • Automatic Synchronization: When network coverage resumes, the system securely syncs new and updated data to the backend, reducing manual tasks and minimizing data loss.

This design empowers rural and remote landowners to gather essential rangeland health information without being hindered by regional connectivity challenges.

Transition to Hybrid for Cross-Platform Availability

Originally, the app was developed exclusively for iOS. Recognizing a need to reach more users, IBC Digital migrated the solution to a hybrid model in 2023, pairing a progressive web application (PWA) with thin native wrappers. This dramatically simplified maintenance while also extending the app’s reach to Android—providing broader access to GCG’s stakeholders and ensuring consistency in user experience across both platforms.

Custom app developed in collaboration

Comprehensive Monitoring & Analysis

Built in collaboration with rangeland experts and a community of volunteer stakeholders, the app:

  • Records Key Land Metrics: Soil structure, vegetation types, erosion levels, and rangeland health indicators—data critical to sustainable land management.
  • Incorporates GIS & Spatial Data: Users can view site maps, reference historical data, and analyse long-term trends.
  • Delivers User-Centric Design: An intuitive interface helps both novices and seasoned land managers quickly record observations.

This functionality enables primary industry stakeholders to document and self-assess the sustainability of their land, generating essential insights for regulators and the broader community.

User Friendly with seamless administration & hosting

In parallel with the mobile app, IBC Digital revitalized a secure web administration portal:

  • Central Management: GCG staff can manage user permissions, import historical datasets in bulk, and review submitted field observations.
  • Reporting & Analytics: Custom reports aid in decision-making, grant reporting, and educational outreach.

Smart app with built in Security and Scalability

What began with external hosting has been migrated into IBC Digital’s ISO-certified data centre environment, providing robust security, frequent backups, and proactive maintenance. the Hybrid model keeps the Rangelands Monitoring App agile to align with evolving store requirements at less cost.

Ongoing Evolution & Dedicated Support

Since 2019, the system has seen steady improvements to cut costs, expand functionality, and ensure relevance:

  • Hybrid App Conversion: Single codebase for both iOS and Android, greatly simplifying updates and maintaining parity across devices.
  • Regular Maintenance & Security: We apply prompt security patches, coordinate user feedback loops, and refine features for usability.
  • Close Collaboration: Our development and account management teams keep a direct line of communication open with GCG, offering responsive troubleshooting, training, and strategic consulting.

Delivering Real-World Impact

The Rangelands Monitoring App is integral to GCG’s mission of fostering sustainable land management practices. By supporting offline data capture and seamless online syncing, it ensures crucial observations about erosion, soil health, and vegetation trends are consistently recorded. This data-driven approach benefits:

  • Landholders seeking practical, on-the-spot insights into pasture conditions.
  • Regulators & Researchers requiring reliable data for ecosystem assessments and policy.
  • Community Stakeholders invested in the region’s ecological longevity.

IBC Digital’s ability to revitalize projects and deliver long-term value through thorough development, user-focused design, and comprehensive support—especially in remote use cases—continues to reinforce our reputation as a trusted digital partner for Western Australian industries and organizations.
